The essentials in three lines

  • An international airport about 25 km from the centre, a beach right in town, afternoons around 21 °C in the depths of winter: Agadir is a gentle introduction to Morocco.
  • Before you go: Morocco has been on GMT since 20 September 2026, with no seasonal clock change planned, the dirham is exchanged locally, French is widely spoken, and clothing that respects local customs is recommended.
  • In town, petits taxis are all you need. For Taroudant, Essaouira or Tafraoute, a car leaves you free to explore; at Carsalis, delivery is free to the airport, your hotel or the centre of Agadir.

This is your first trip to Morocco. You have spotted a flight to Agadir this autumn or winter, and a few questions are holding you back: what time is it there, where can you change money, will people speak French, how should you dress, do you need a car? Here are our answers, with sources to back them up.

Why Agadir is an easy gateway

Agadir Al Massira International Airport is about 25 km from the city centre, around half an hour by road.

According to the municipality of Agadir, the city was almost entirely destroyed by the earthquake of 29 February 1960, then rebuilt to the south of the old town, with wide avenues and modern buildings. Along the bay, a promenade separates the beach from the hotels and café terraces, according to the regional tourism website, and leads on foot all the way to the marina.

As for the climate, according to Open-Meteo data for 2016-2025 and the 1991-2020 normals from the nearby Inezgane station, afternoons hover around 21 to 22 °C from December to February, and around 26 °C in October. Winter nights are cool, between 8 and 12 °C on average, and the rain, which is infrequent, falls mainly between November and March. These are averages, not a promise for your week.

Day trips a few hours' drive away

Agadir also makes a good base. Distances and journey times checked in October 2026 on the OSRM route planner (OpenStreetMap data): allow for the upper end of the range.

Taroudant : about 80 km to the east, allow 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30. The town is surrounded by 7.5 km of ramparts and nicknamed “little Marrakech”.

Essaouira : about 175 km to the north, mostly on national road 1, which takes 3 hours to 3 hours 30.

Tafraoute : about 160 km via Biougra and Aït Baha, a slower mountain road. Allow 3 hours to 3 hours 30, and check the state of the road before you set off.

Marrakech : about 250 km by motorway, around 3 hours.

We also deliver and collect the car in Marrakech, Essaouira or Taroudant, for a supplement of €60 per journey: a delivery and a collection outside Agadir count as two journeys. Mileage is unlimited, but if a road turns into a dirt track, stop where the tarmac ends : our rental conditions prohibit unpaved tracks, except for vehicles expressly suited to them. Our day-trip ideas are in our article on day trips from Agadir by car.

Before you go: time, money, languages, clothing

The time. Since 20 September 2026, Morocco has been on GMT, with no seasonal change planned (Decree No. 2.26.530). During European winter time, from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March, Paris, Brussels, Geneva and Madrid are 1 hour ahead of Agadir, and London is on the same time; in summer, the difference rises to 2 hours for Paris and 1 hour for London. For delivery at the airport, give us the local arrival time shown on your ticket and your flight number.

Money. The currency is the Moroccan dirham (DH, code MAD). According to the Moroccan National Tourist Office, you can change money at the airport, at bureaux de change in tourist areas or at your hotel, and pay in cash or by card. Keep your exchange receipts : under the Office des Changes regulations, they are in principle required to change your last dirhams back before you leave. For the hire itself, we prefer a bank transfer; payment on arrival is still possible under certain conditions, in cash or by card (+5% bank charges). The details are in our article on how to pay for your car hire in cash.

Languages. The 2011 Constitution makes Arabic and Amazigh the country's two official languages. In everyday life, people mainly speak Darija, Moroccan Arabic, and in the Souss, Tashelhit, an Amazigh language. French, the country's leading foreign language, is widely used in administration and the media.

Clothing. The French Ministry for Foreign Affairs recommends clothing that respects local customs and discreet behaviour. In winter, add a warm layer for the evening. As for documents, bring a passport valid for your whole stay: that is the rule set out for French citizens; if you hold another nationality, check with your own authorities.

Driving in Morocco: the key points

Traffic drives on the right. Decree No. 2-10-420 on the rules of the road sets, for a car, 120 km/h on motorways and 100 km/h outside built-up areas. Your valid foreign driving licence is accepted for up to one year from the start of your stay. At Carsalis, the main driver must be at least 21 and have held a licence for 2 years.

France Diplomatie describes national roads that are generally well maintained but sometimes narrow, unattended animals, and highlights the share of pedestrians among road victims. It also advises against driving at night: plan your journeys in daylight. Our tips are in our article on driving in Morocco as a tourist.

Getting around: taxis in town, a car for day trips

In town, a car is of little use. The red or orange petits taxis cover journeys within Agadir and take three passengers at most ; the regional tourism website advises checking that the meter is running. To get from the airport to the centre, it mentions the white grands taxis, whose fare you agree before getting in.

A car becomes useful as soon as you leave Agadir. If you are planning day trips from your very first days, pick it up at the airport, where delivery is free (see the arrival process at Al Massira airport). Otherwise, start with a few days at the beach: we can then deliver it to your hotel in Agadir, also free of charge.

The hire is counted in 24-hour blocks, with 24/7 assistance. You book with a simple request, with no online payment: your dates, our confirmation, then a copy of your passport and of both sides of your driving licence. On your return, we advise dropping the car off 2 hours before your flight departs.
