The answer fits into one sentence: the documents needed to rent a car in Morocco come down to a valid driving licence, a valid form of identification, and meeting two simple conditions — being at least 21 years old and having held your licence for at least 2 years. Which documents you need to rent a car in Morocco: the details

Many travellers imagine a heavy file to put together before leaving. In reality, two documents are enough in the vast majority of cases.

The driving licence

This is the key document. It must be valid, legible, and match the person who will actually be driving. An expired licence, one damaged to the point of being illegible, or a provisional licence is a problem: it does not allow the vehicle to be handed over to you.

A point that is often overlooked: the licence must have been obtained at least 2 years ago. This is not just one more administrative formality, it is a rental condition. A driver who has just passed their test, even at the age of 30, does not meet this criterion.

Proof of identity

A passport for foreign travellers, a national identity card for Moroccan residents. It is used to confirm your identity and your date of birth, and therefore your age. Here too, it must be valid at the time of the rental.

The second driver

If your partner, a friend or a family member is going to drive part of the way, they provide the same documents as you: a licence held for 2 years, proof of identity, minimum age 21. A second driver is possible for an extra charge, but must be declared before departure. Someone who drives without having been registered falls outside the scope of the contract, and that changes everything if there is a problem on the road.

Minimum age and length of licence: two conditions that are not open to negotiation

The minimum age is set at 21. The licence must have been held for 2 years. These two rules are cumulative: you have to tick both boxes, not one or the other.

Why so strict? Because driving in Morocco takes experience. The roads of the Souss, the routes towards Taroudant or Essaouira, urban traffic in Agadir at rush hour: these are environments where anticipation counts for more than engine power. A young driver who has only been behind the wheel for a short time ends up in situations they have not had the chance to learn to handle.

Another, more concrete reason: damage to the vehicle is not covered. If the driver is at fault for damage, the repair remains at their expense. Checking experience up front therefore also protects the customer, who knows exactly what they are committing to. The international driving permit: required or not?

This is the question that comes up most often, and the answer deserves some nuance.

The international driving permit is not a licence in its own right. It is an official translation of your national licence, recognised abroad. It never replaces the original: the two are presented together, never one without the other. An international permit on its own has no value.

In practice, a modern European licence, in card format and written in Latin characters, is generally understood without difficulty. The international permit becomes genuinely useful in two cases:

  • your licence is written in a non-Latin alphabet (Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese…);
  • your licence is an old paper model, difficult to read or to interpret.

In those situations, it avoids misunderstandings, both at the agency and during a roadside check. The sensible advice: if in doubt, apply for it before you leave. It is issued in your country of residence, costs very little, and you cannot obtain it once you have arrived in Morocco. Better to have it and not need it than the other way round.

What is asked for before booking, and why

Even before talking about documents, a few pieces of information are needed to prepare the rental properly. Nothing intrusive, but each item has a practical purpose.

  • The exact dates of pick-up and return. They determine availability and the rate: a city car such as the Dacia Sandero or the Hyundai i10 is 25 € per day, dropping to 20 € per day from 7 rental days. A saloon such as the Dacia Logan or Skoda Rapid is 30 €, then 25 € from 7 days.
  • The delivery location. Delivery is free anywhere in Agadir: Al Massira airport, hotel, town centre or your address. For Marrakech, Essaouira, Taroudant or the Souss region, allow 60 € per journey, bearing in mind that the outward and return trips count as two journeys.
  • The number of passengers and items of luggage. This is what guides the choice between a city car, a family vehicle (Dacia Dokker, Lodgy, Renault Kangoo, from 40 € per day on request) or a 4×4 (Dacia Duster, Mitsubishi Pajero, VW Touareg, Range Rover, from 55 € per day on request).   • Your flight number if you are arriving by air, so that the handover time can be adjusted in the event of a delay.
  • Confirmation that you meet the conditions on age and length of licence, and whether there is a second driver.

As for payment, there is no online payment. The preferred method is a secure bank transfer, and European transfers are accepted. What the documents do not cover

Providing the right paperwork allows you to take to the road. It does not cover everything, and it is better to know that before rather than after.

Included in the rate: unlimited mileage, third-party liability insurance and assistance available 24/7. Damage caused to the vehicle, on the other hand, is not covered: if you are at fault, the repair is at your expense. Fuel is also at your expense, and the vehicle must be returned at the same level as at the start.

A few rules complete the picture: no smoking in the vehicle, off-road driving prohibited except with suitable vehicles, a 100 MAD cleaning charge if the car is returned very dirty, and fines payable by the renter. For a return at the airport, plan to hand the car back 2 hours before your flight: it is comfortable for you, and it avoids any rushing.
