The essentials in three lines

  • The Agadir – Marrakech – Essaouira – Agadir loop is about 605 km, all on tarmac: the motorway to Marrakech, an expressway from Chichaoua to Essaouira, then the N1 national road, which reaches the ocean near Tamri.
  • In five days: three days of driving, two nights in Marrakech, two in Essaouira, and the car in a car park during your visits, never in the narrow streets of the medinas.
  • At Carsalis, mileage is unlimited and delivery is free in Agadir: a loop that starts and ends in Agadir carries no journey surcharge.

You have five days, a car collected in Agadir, and you want to see Marrakech and Essaouira without making two return trips. The answer: the loop. You drive up to Marrakech, reach the coast at Essaouira, then head back down to Agadir on the N1. Our articles on the road from Agadir to Marrakech and on the Agadir – Essaouira drive already go through these sections in detail. Here, we put it all together: the direction, the pace, the nights and parking near the medinas.

The loop in figures: about 605 km, three stages

According to the OSRM route planner, the loop is about 605 km from the centre of Agadir, for 8 hours 30 minutes of theoretical non-stop driving. This calculation ignores city traffic and breaks. Allow about ten hours instead, spread over three days of driving.

Agadir – Marrakech, about 250 km, is mostly on the motorway, a dual carriageway in service since 2010 according to Autoroutes du Maroc. Marrakech – Essaouira, about 185 km: you leave Marrakech heading west as far as Chichaoua, then a dual-carriageway expressway, listed by the Ministry of Equipment, takes you to Essaouira. Essaouira – Agadir, about 175 km, follows the N1: first inland, then along the ocean from Tamri onwards.

On the motorway, the limit is 120 km/h; outside built-up areas, on the expressway as on the N1, it is 100 km/h (Decree No. 2-10-420, Articles 17 and 18). Follow the signs: the limits drop in towns and villages.

Day Stage Distance Time to allow Night
1 Agadir – Marrakech, by motorway About 250 km 3½ to 4 hours with a break Marrakech
2 Marrakech on foot None Car stays in the car park Marrakech
3 Marrakech – Essaouira, via Chichaoua About 185 km 3 h à 3 h 30 Essaouira
4 Essaouira on foot None Car stays in the car park Essaouira
5 Essaouira – Agadir, on the N1 About 175 km 3 to 3½ hours without a long stop Back to Agadir
Total Full loop About 605 km About ten hours over three days Four nights

Which way round?

Both directions work. We recommend starting with Marrakech and finishing with Essaouira. On the first day, the motorway is the easiest section: wide lanes, interchanges, no villages to drive through. The slowest section comes last, once you have found your bearings: on the N1, OSRM gives about 2 hours 50 minutes for 175 km, compared with 2 hours 40 minutes for the 185 km between Marrakech and Essaouira.

For a break on this last stage, choose Tamri, on the main road, or Imsouane, a fishing village less than 10 km from the N1, not both. If your return flight leaves on day 5, allow a proper margin. From Essaouira, Agadir Al Massira airport is about 205 km away, or 3 hours 40 minutes of theoretical driving according to OSRM, and we advise returning the car 2 hours before the flight. Leave at least six and a half hours before take-off, or put the loop in the middle of your stay.

The pace: three days on the road, two days on foot

Five days is the minimum for the loop to still feel like a trip. Our advice: never two long stages in a row, and a full day without the car in each city. The medinas of Marrakech and Essaouira are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the first since 1985, the second since 2001.

On driving days, set off in the morning. According to Open-Meteo data, there are only about 11 hours of daylight at the end of October: drive in daylight, especially on the N1 and when approaching the cities. Before you set off, download an offline map of the region, as we explain in our article on GPS and mobile signal outside the towns.

In October, Open-Meteo averages for 2016-2025 give afternoons of around 30 °C in Marrakech and 24 °C in Essaouira, where the daily maximum wind is on average almost twice as strong. Rain remains rare, about three days in the month. Keep water in the car and a jacket for evenings on the coast.

Parking near the medinas: a paid car park, then on foot

In both cities, the car stays in the car park and you explore the medina on foot. The alleys of the medinas are narrow and busy, and a navigation app may send you into them. Find your car park before you arrive.

In Marrakech, OpenStreetMap lists several paid car parks around the Koutoubia, including the Koutoubia car park, less than a kilometre from Jemaa el-Fna square; some are marked there as guarded (checked in October 2026). If you are staying in a riad, ask your accommodation before you arrive which car park to use: if the riad is at the end of an alleyway, the car will not reach its door.

In Essaouira, OpenStreetMap shows paid car parks on the edge of the medina: near Bab Marrakech, on Avenue Lalla Aïcha, and by the port, near Place Moulay Hassan. These records date from October 2026: check on the spot and ask the price before you park. On days 2 and 4, the car does not move: leave nothing visible inside, and make a note of the car park's name.

What your hire includes for the loop

Mileage is unlimited: the loop's 605 km or so make no difference to the hire price. As the car starts and ends in Agadir, delivery and collection are free, at the airport, at your hotel or in the city centre. Ending in Marrakech or Essaouira is possible, with a surcharge of €60 per journey; a pick-up and a drop-off outside Agadir count as two journeys. Full details are on our booking request.

Hire is counted in 24-hour periods, and any day begun beyond 2 hours is charged. Example: collected on day 1 at 9 am and returned on day 5 at 5 pm, the car counts four 24-hour periods plus eight hours, so five days. Returned by 11 am at the latest, it would count only four, but you would have to leave Essaouira very early. Returning more than 2 hours late without prior agreement means a full day is charged: if the road holds you up, let us know on WhatsApp before the agreed time.

The whole route is on tarmac, and a city car is enough. Our rental conditions prohibit unsurfaced tracks, except for vehicles expressly suited to them : if a sign to a beach or a village points to a dirt track, stop where the tarmac ends. Return the car with the fuel level recorded at delivery, and fill up before each stage. The €10 cleaning fee applies only once per booking, even after five days on the road. Assistance is available 24/7, and any fines remain the hirer's responsibility.
