The essentials in three lines

  • The kasbah of Agadir Oufella overlooks the bay from more than 200 m up, about 5 km from Al Amal square along a winding tarmac road: allow 10 to 15 minutes by car.
  • The official website mentions a car park halfway up; for the rest of the way: a footpath, a shuttle bus or a taxi. The cable car, for its part, leaves from the Cité Suisse and arrives directly at the kasbah in 7 to 14 minutes.
  • Come in the late afternoon for the light over the bay: in the second half of October, the sun sets at around 6pm, and the kasbah closes at 7pm under its normal opening hours.

From Agadir beach, you can see it from your very first day: a hill to the north of the bay, topped with ramparts. That is Agadir Oufella, the old kasbah, and it is the easiest outing to fit in on the day you arrive. All that remains is to know which way to go up, where to leave the car, whether the cable car is the better option, and what time to come. Here is what we checked, with opening hours noted on 10 October 2026.

The road: 5 km from the centre, tarmac all the way to the top

The Agadir Oufella road starts in the Cité Suisse district, at the foot of the hill, and climbs in hairpin bends for about 2.6 km up to the kasbah. According to OpenStreetMap, it is surfaced, lit and has one lane in each direction along its entire length. From Al Amal square, in the city centre, the full journey is about 5 km: allow 10 to 15 minutes when traffic is light.

The climb is not difficult, but the bends come one after another and you share the road with taxis and the shuttle. Do not overtake on the bends, and on the way down, slow down before each bend.

One thing to know: in January 2019, after repeated fatal accidents, the authorities closed this road at night to all vehicles, taxis included, according to the news website Telegramme. We have not found any more recent text that lifts or clarifies this measure. Plan to come back down before nightfall, and ask locally if you intend to stay late.

Where to park: the car park halfway up, then on foot, by shuttle or by taxi

The official kasbah website (checked on 10 October 2026) mentions a ‘car park halfway up’, as well as a footpath, a shuttle bus and taxis: plan to finish the climb on foot, by shuttle or by taxi. The local website Agadir Expat News also describes, in June 2026, a small car park halfway up the hill, from where you can walk up. So do not count on a space right by the entrance: follow the signs and the instructions given on site, which may change depending on how busy it is.

This car park is small: on busy days, arrive early or take a taxi. And do not stop on the side of the winding road for a photo: it is dangerous for you and for others, and any fine received during the hire is payable by the hirer under our rental conditions.

If you enjoy walking, a laid-out path of about 2.8 km links the bottom of the hill to the summit, with rest areas along the way, according to the Souss-Massa regional tourism development company.

Car or cable car: which should you choose?

The Agadir cable car leaves from the Cité Suisse (Tildi bridge, rue Echouhada), less than 1.5 km from Al Amal square, and arrives directly at the kasbah. According to its operator, Danialand, the ride takes 7 to 14 minutes, and the line runs from 10am to 10pm (checked on 10 October 2026). Tickets are not free, and are sold one-way or return: check the price on site. The operator does not mention any parking at the lower station.

Our view: with young children or someone who does not walk much, the cable car is the most comfortable option, since it drops you right at the kasbah. The car keeps the advantage of flexibility: you go up whenever you like, then carry on along the corniche or the road north.

Option Starting point Journey Arrival Good to know

Up top: the view over the bay, and the memory of 1960

From the summit, more than 200 m up, the view takes in the bay, the marina, the city and the hinterland. There is a charge to enter the kasbah, and the official website lets you book tickets online.

The Saadians took the Portuguese town on the bay in 1541, then turned the hill into an important kasbah in 1572, according to its official website. On 29 February 1960, at 11.41pm, the Agadir earthquake destroyed more than 90% of it; only the south wall held. Restored, it has been open to visitors inside since 3 February 2024: allow 45 to 50 minutes on wooden walkways, with an audio guide offered in five languages.

These raised walkways were designed out of respect for the victims of the earthquake, some of whose graves may lie on the site, according to the SDRT Souss-Massa. The visitor rules ask for appropriate dress and quiet, and prohibit smoking, eating or drinking inside. To find out more, the Mémoire d'Agadir museum, in the Olhão garden, shows the city before and after 1960.

The best time: late afternoon, ideally on the day you arrive

The kasbah is open every day, from 10am to 7pm under normal hours and until 8pm in summer, with last entry 30 minutes before closing (official website, checked on 10 October 2026: check again before you set off). The best light comes in the late afternoon: the regional tourist office recommends going at sunset.

Since 20 September 2026, Morocco has been back on GMT. As a result, the sun sets in Agadir at around 6pm in the second half of October, then between 5.37pm and 5.50pm in November and December, according to Open-Meteo. Arrive at the car park an hour and a half beforehand, come back down just after, and take a jacket: average minimum temperatures drop from about 18°C in October to 11°C in January. During Ramadan, the kasbah closes at 4.30pm; in 2027, Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February according to the calendar, to be confirmed by the sighting of the crescent moon.

It is the ideal outing for your arrival day: Al Massira airport is about 29 km from the kasbah, a 35 to 45-minute drive. At Carsalis, delivery is free at the airport, at your hotel or in Agadir city centre: give your flight details in the booking request, drop off your luggage, then head up.
