Driving to Marrakech from Agadir takes half a day if you set off early in the morning. The two cities are linked by the motorway, so there is no need to drive through the centre of a town along the way. Tolls are paid in dirhams at each toll station, fuel remains at your expense, and a one-way trip is possible: you pick up the car in Agadir and leave it in Marrakech, for 60 € per journey, with delivery and drop-off counting as two journeys; the exact amount is confirmed when you make your request. Here are the details, point by point.

Driving to Marrakech from Agadir: which route to take

The motorway, the default route

From Agadir, you join the motorway via Aït Melloul, then follow the signs for Marrakech. The route crosses the Souss plain, runs alongside the argan forest, climbs the western foothills of the High Atlas towards Argana, then drops down onto the Chichaoua plain before reaching Marrakech. The exits serve Oulad Teima, Taroudant, Argana and Chichaoua, among others, so you can break the journey wherever you like.

The road surface is in good condition, the lanes are wide and the signage is legible in Arabic and French. Two points deserve your attention: heavy goods traffic on the mountain section, where overtaking takes time, and the crosswind on exposed stretches, which is felt most in tall vehicles such as 4×4s and family cars.

The old national road, for those who have time

The national road is still open and passes through villages, weekly markets and argan oil cooperatives. It is slower, more winding and more tiring: villages to drive through, mopeds, animals on the road. It makes sense if the drive is part of the trip and you plan to stop along the way. For a simple transfer between two cities, the motorway remains more restful, especially with children on board or at the end of the day.

How long the journey really takes

In normal conditions, allow half a day door to door, breaks included. The theoretical time shown by navigation apps does not take three realities into account: leaving Agadir at peak times, the stop at a service area, and the arrival into Marrakech, where the traffic slows down noticeably as soon as you approach the ramparts and the medina.

A few simple pointers. Setting off early in the morning means you arrive in time for lunch and keep the afternoon free. Avoiding arrival after dark makes it easier to find a riad in the medina, where the streets are narrow and access by car is limited. If you have a return flight straight afterwards, allow plenty of time: we recommend returning the vehicle 2 h before take-off.

Tolls, fuel and budget on the road

The motorway is a toll road. You take a ticket on entry and pay on exit, in dirhams. Keep cash and small change on you: it is the simplest method at the toll stations, where the current rates are displayed. A little cash also avoids unpleasant surprises for a coffee, a sandwich or a stop at a service area.

Fuel is at the renter's expense. Petrol stations appear at regular intervals along the motorway, but fill up before you leave rather than waiting until you are on reserve. The return rule is simple: the vehicle is handed back with the same fuel level as at pick-up. As unlimited mileage is included, the distance covered between Agadir, Marrakech and your excursions there does not incur any extra charge.

One-way with drop-off in Marrakech: what it costs

This is the most common question: can you pick up the car in Agadir and leave it in Marrakech? Yes.

Delivery is free everywhere in Agadir: Al Massira airport, hotel, city centre or home address. For Marrakech, one journey is charged at 60 €. A drop-off there therefore counts as one journey, i.e. 60 €. If you ask for both delivery and drop-off in Marrakech, that represents two journeys, each leg being counted separately.

A concrete example for two days in a city car, picked up at your hotel in Agadir and dropped off in Marrakech: 25 €/day, i.e. 50 € of rental, plus 60 € for the drop-off, so 110 € in total, with fuel and tolls on top. In a saloon, the base rate rises to 30 €/day. From 7 days, the rates drop to 20 €/day for a city car and 25 €/day for a saloon, which changes the calculation if you keep the car to explore the region after Marrakech.

What is included and what is not

Included in the price: the unlimited mileage, third-party liability insurance and 24/7 assistance. That last point matters on an intercity route, where you can find yourself a long way from the nearest town.

Not included, and it is better to know before you set off:

  • Any damage to the vehicle is not covered. If you are at fault, the repair is at your expense.
  • Fuel, as well as any traffic fines.
  • A 100 MAD cleaning charge if the vehicle is returned very dirty, which happens quickly after a dusty road.

Terms and booking

The driver must be at least 21 years old and have held a valid licence for 2 years. A second driver is possible for an extra charge, which is a good idea if you take turns on the road. Smoking is not allowed in the vehicles.

There is no online payment. The preferred method is a secure bank transfer, and European transfers are accepted. Payment in cash or by card on arrival remains possible under certain conditions, card payment incurring 5 % bank charges. Everything is detailed on the payment methods.
