The essentials in three lines

  • A deposit is not a payment : it is an amount frozen on your credit line, often between €1,000 and €2,000 in Morocco.
  • Releasing it is no longer up to you : it depends on the agency, then on your bank.
  • There is no legal ceiling : each agency sets its own amount and its own delay.

The deposit is where car rentals go wrong. Not the price, not the model: the deposit. It is an amount the agency freezes on your card when you collect the vehicle, and that you only see again after the return — sometimes long after. Understanding this mechanism before you leave spares you the nasty surprise at the counter.

A deposit is not a payment

The confusion is common and it is expensive. When an agency takes a deposit, it does not debit you: it asks your bank to reserve an amount on your credit line. That amount does not show up as a expense, but it is no longer available.

In practice, your card limit is reduced by that amount for the whole stay. If your card is capped at €3,000 and the deposit is €1,500, you have €1,500 left for the hotel, restaurants and fuel. That is where the trip gets complicated, and it is rarely explained at the time of booking.

How much, and for how long

The amounts recorded in Morocco are most often between €1,000 and €2,000 depending on the vehicle category. There is no legal ceiling: each agency sets its own. The release time varies just as much: a few days with some, several weeks with others, with a part that then depends on your bank.

What you are told What it means
« Just an imprint » An amount really is reserved on your credit line
« It is released on return » The agency lifts the hold; your bank then takes its own time
« Credit card compulsory » A debit card does not allow the pre-authorisation
« Reduced deposit » A daily supplement is sold to you to bring the amount down

Why Carsalis does not ask for one

Our rental conditions say so in as many words: « No deposit is required. We count on our customers' trust to cover repairs in the event of damage for which they are responsible. »

The other side has to be said just as plainly : we do not sell insurance covering damage to the vehicle. Only third-party liability is included — it covers damage caused to others. If you are responsible for damage to the car, the repair remains at your expense, on a quotation and an invoice.

Nobody wins on both sides. Paying less and having nothing blocked means carrying that risk yourself. We would rather tell you beforehand than have you read it in small print.

The five questions to ask before signing

  1. What is the exact deposit amount, for this vehicle category?
  2. Is it blocked, or debited and then refunded?
  3. How long does it take to be released after the return?
  4. What happens in the event of a scratch: on what basis is it charged?
  5. Is there a daily supplement to reduce it, and what exactly does it cover?

Ask for these answers in writing, on WhatsApp or by e-mail. A serious agency answers in a few lines. An agency that falls back on « we will see when you get here » is announcing the problem in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is a deposit compulsory in Morocco?

No, no law requires it. It is a commercial practice, specific to each agency. Some do not ask for one.

Can you leave a deposit in cash?

Some agencies accept it, others do not. Cash has one drawback: you have no bank record of the hold, only a paper receipt.

What happens if the deposit is not returned?

You have to claim it from the agency and then, if necessary, dispute it with your bank. It takes a long time, and it is exactly the kind of dispute we avoid by not asking for one.

Does Carsalis take a card imprint?

No. No deposit, no security deposit, no imprint kept.
