The essentials in three lines
- The Souk El Had is closed on Mondays for its weekly clean, according to the Regional Tourism Council and several guides. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, during the day.
- Attended car parks line the walls on all four sides. Park near a gate and note its number: the wall has 13 of them.
- Come on a midweek morning, bring cash, and put your shopping in the boot, out of sight, before you drive off.
You have a hire car in Agadir and half a day ahead of you. The Souk El Had is on every list: spices, olives, argan oil, amlou, clothes, crafts. Before setting off, three questions come up: is it open today, where do you leave the car, and how do you find your space again after two hours in the alleys? The souk is about 1 km as the crow flies from our office. Here are our answers, with sources.
Closed on Mondays: opening days and hours
On the closing day, the sources agree. The Agadir Souss-Massa Regional Tourism Council states that the souk is closed on Mondays for its weekly clean, and Guide Agadir, Maroculturel, Marocnomades and Agadir Monuments say the same. The name itself is a clue: “El Had” means Sunday in Arabic, and Sunday remains a very busy day.
Opening hours, on the other hand, vary from one guide to another. Maroculturel and Marocnomades give Tuesday to Sunday, 9 am to 9 pm; other sites publish shorter hours, especially on Sundays. In practice, each trader opens and closes at their own pace. Aim for the morning or early afternoon, and leave yourself some leeway if you come late in the day. These hours were checked in October 2026: they may change, so check them before you set off.
At the time of Friday prayer, some traders close for a while, according to Maroculturel. During Ramadan, whose dates follow the calendar and are confirmed by sighting the crescent moon, opening hours are adjusted, and Generation Voyage reports that the souk closes on the days of Eid.
When to go to avoid the crowds
The souk is as popular with people from the region as it is with visitors. The Regional Tourism Council recommends a morning visit midweek; Guide Agadir advises avoiding late afternoon, weekends and the day before religious festivals. By car, these quiet times count double: fewer people in the alleys, and a better chance of finding a space near the gate you want.
| Time | What the sources say | Our advice by car |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Closed for the weekly clean | Plan another outing that day |
| Midweek, in the morning | Time recommended by the Regional Tourism Council | The best slot for parking and getting around |
| Friday, at prayer time | Some traders close for a while | Arrive before or after prayer |
| Late afternoon | Peak hours according to Guide Agadir | Best avoided if you have the choice |
| Saturday and Sunday | Very busy, especially on Sundays | Arrive early, or choose a weekday |
| The day before religious festivals | Peak time to avoid according to Guide Agadir | Avoid going by car |
Where to leave the car: the car parks around the walls
The souk is a large enclosure surrounded by a 6 m high wall, spanning more than 13 hectares according to the Regional Tourism Council. You cannot drive inside: you park outside. According to OpenStreetMap, checked in October 2026, several parking areas line the walls on all four sides: to the north along rue Oued N'Fiss, to the east along rue du 2 Mars, to the south towards avenue Abderrahim Bouabid, and to the west. Some are marked as paid.
Guide Agadir describes these car parks as attended: ask the attendant for the price when you arrive rather than when you leave, and keep some change in the car. Along avenue Abderrahim Bouabid, OpenStreetMap also shows a lane reserved for the rapid bus: do not stop there, not even to unload a bag.
As for getting there, the souk is very central. By road, it is about 3 km from boulevard du 20 Août, on the seafront, and about 6.5 km from the marina, according to the OSRM route calculator. Allow 5 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. In town, a city car slips more easily into a free space: our guide Which car to hire in Agadir helps you choose.
Thirteen numbered gates: note yours
The wall has 13 large gates, according to the Regional Tourism Council. They are numbered: on OpenStreetMap, the bus stops around the souk have names such as “Porte 2” or “Entree 6”. Going by the outline of the walls on the same map, the wall runs about 1.6 km all the way round. Coming out through the wrong gate can therefore mean walking all the way round, bags in hand.
The habit that avoids this: as you go in, take a photo of the gate number, then of the car with a landmark in the car park. We do not give a “this gate for that product” list: the guides do not agree, and the stalls move around. For a particular section, ask at the entrance.
After shopping: paying, carrying, stowing
The Regional Tourism Council makes it clear: the shops in the souk do not accept card payments. Bring cash before you park. Inside, Guide Agadir mentions cart porters, the “carrossa”, who carry your shopping for a small fee: agree on the price before loading up.
Put everything in the boot, and leave nothing visible inside the car: no bag, no phone, no shopping on the back seat. If you are heading on to a beach, load the boot as you leave the souk, not in the next car park, where people would see you doing it. Close the spice bags tightly, and wedge the argan oil and amlou upright in a shopping bag so they do not tip over at the first roundabout.
What your rental includes for a trip to the souk
Mileage is unlimited: one return trip to the souk, or three, makes no difference to your bill. If you are staying in Agadir, we deliver the car free of charge to your hotel, the airport or the town centre; it is all explained in our article on delivering the car to your hotel. Assistance is available 24/7: if the car will not start in the car park, call us before doing anything else.
Saving the souk for the last day, for gifts, is tempting. If you do, leave yourself some leeway. The souk is about 22 km from the Al Massira terminal by road, and we advise returning the car 2 hours before your flight time. Allow at least half an hour for the journey, more at busy times, and see our article on returning the car at the airport. The rental is charged in 24-hour periods: if you are more than 2 hours late without prior agreement, a full day is charged. All the rules are set out in our rental conditions.
