The essentials in three lines

  • Taliouine is about 186 km from Agadir on national road 10, which is tarmac all the way: allow 2 hr 40 without stopping, or more like 3 hr to 3 hr 30 with a break.
  • The saffron flowering usually begins in mid-October and lasts about three weeks. The flowers are picked early in the morning, before they open.
  • To see the picking, stay the night. On a there-and-back day trip, you will see the fields, the cooperatives and the kasbah, and unlimited mileage takes care of the roughly 370 km.

You are spending the autumn in Agadir and someone has told you about Taliouine saffron: fields of purple flowers, a very early-morning harvest, cooperatives. The small town lies inland, east of Taroudant. What remains is to find out how long the drive takes, when to come, whether to stay the night and what your car hire includes. Here are our answers.

The route: the N10, via Taroudant

Taliouine lies east of Agadir, in the province of Taroudant. The OSRM route planner gives about 186 km from central Agadir, almost entirely on national road 10, for 2 hr 40 of driving. From Al Massira airport, the distance drops to about 164 km. These times are theoretical: allow more like 3 hr to 3 hr 30 with a stop.

The first stretch, as far as Taroudant, is the one we describe in our article Agadir – Taroudant by car : about 80 km. The N10 passes a few kilometres south of the ramparts, so you can stop there on the way out or on the way back. After that, there are about a hundred kilometres left heading east, towards the Siroua massif. According to OpenStreetMap, the N10 is a major national road all the way, and every section with recorded data is asphalt: no dirt track is needed to reach Taliouine. Still, check the state of the road before you set off.

Outside built-up areas, the limit is 100 km/h, and it drops in every village you pass through. Drive in daylight: in autumn, the days get shorter. Also download the map of the region before you set off, as we explain in our article on GPS and mobile signal outside the towns.

Taliouine saffron: when and how the harvest takes place

Saffron has been grown for centuries around Taliouine, in the Siroua massif, where the High Atlas meets the Anti-Atlas, according to the FAO. According to the FAO's good practice guide, flowering generally begins in mid-October and lasts about three weeks, peaking towards the end of October. The dates shift from one year to the next: for the peak, aim for the second half of October or the very beginning of November.

The flower, a purple crocus, is short-lived: it must be picked on the day it comes up, before it opens. The same guide recommends picking between 5 and 8 in the morning, before the heat, because the sun makes saffron lose some of its aroma and colour. The flowers are then taken to the house or a shed for stripping: the red filaments, the stigmas, are separated by hand from the rest of the flower. It takes about 150,000 to 170,000 flowers to obtain one kilo of dried saffron.

The name “Safran de Taliouine” (Taliouine saffron) has been an officially recognised designation of origin in Morocco since 2010, under an order from the Ministry of Agriculture listed by ONSSA. It rests on approved specifications: only saffron that meets them may carry the name.

On site: cooperatives, the Maison du Safran and the kasbah

The region's tourism website, Explore Agadir Souss Massa, makes Taliouine a stop on its “Saffron Route” circuit. It advises going to see the fields first, then stopping at a cooperative to understand how the spice is traditionally grown. The Souktana cooperative, founded in 1979, describes itself as the oldest in Taliouine and says it brings together more than 150 producers. The same site mentions the Maison du Safran (Saffron House), where you can taste a saffron-scented tagine.

The Glaoui kasbah, named after the former pasha of Marrakech, is a few minutes from the centre, along a small tarmac road off the N10. The site suggests admiring its details from the neighbouring guesthouse. Check visiting hours before you set off.

For the fields, park at the side of a tarmac road and carry on on foot, without walking into the plots or picking any flowers. Always ask before photographing people at work.

Day trip or overnight stay?

The round trip is about 370 km, which means more than five hours of driving. To see the picking, you need to be in the fields before 8 am: from Agadir, that means leaving in the middle of the night, which we advise against. The simplest solution is to stay the night in Taliouine and get up early: the region's tourism website mentions the guesthouse next to the kasbah.

On a there-and-back day trip, leave early, arrive in the late morning and head back in mid-afternoon so you are back before dark. You will miss the picking, but not the fields, the cooperatives or the kasbah.

Take a jacket. According to Open-Meteo historical data for Taliouine (2016-2025), the average minimum temperature is around 12 °C in the second half of October and 10 °C in early November, while afternoons average more than 20 °C.

Criterion Day trip there and back With a night there
Leaving Agadir Early in the morning The day before, in daylight
Picking (5 to 8 am) Over by the time you arrive Can be seen the next morning
Driving About 370 km, over 5 hr in one day About 186 km a day
Cooperatives and kasbah Late morning, without lingering At an easy pace, over two days
Rental period One 24-hour day may be enough At least two days

What your car hire includes for this trip

Mileage is unlimited: the roughly 370 km of the round trip incur no extra charge. The road is tarmac all the way to Taliouine and to the kasbah: a city car is enough, and you have no reason to take a dirt track. Our rental conditions also prohibit unsurfaced tracks, unless the vehicle is expressly suited to them. If a field or village can only be reached by a track, stop where the tarmac ends and carry on on foot.

The car is returned with the fuel level recorded at delivery: fill up before you set off, as we explain in our article on fuel when hiring a car. Rental is counted in 24-hour blocks, and being more than 2 hours late without prior agreement means a full day is charged. So if you decide along the way to stay the night, let us know on WhatsApp before your planned return time. Assistance is available 24/7.

Staying in Taroudant rather than Agadir? We deliver the car there for a €60 surcharge per journey (delivery and collection count as two journeys), as stated on our booking request. One last tip: if you are taking saffron home, keep it in a closed bag rather than on the dashboard. The FAO recommends storing it away from light and air, in a dry place.
